Textbooks: Georgia Collections and the Holt McDougal Literature collection
Course Description: This course is a survey of American Literature incorporating selections from Native American works through Postmodernism. The course teaches students to write an interpretation of a piece of literature that is based on careful observation of textual details while considering structure, style, and theme with the social and historical values the literature reflects and embodies. Students will write and rewrite formal essays, extended analyses, as well as timed, in-class responses focusing appropriately and effectively. The use of strong vocabulary skills, a variety of sentence structures, logical organization, and an effective use of rhetoric, including tone, voice, diction, and syntax are expected in each piece of writing.
STANDARDS: While this course will encompass all of the Georgia Standards of Excellence for 11th grade, listed below are representative elements of them.
ELAGSE11-12RI1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
ELAGSE11-12W1: Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
ELAGSE11-12SL3: Evaluate speaker’s point-of-view, reasoning, use of evidence and rhetoric, assessing the stance, premises, links among ideas, word choice, points of emphasis, and tone used.
ELAGSE11-12RL6: Analyze a case in which grasping point-of-view requires distinguishing what is directly stated in a text from what is really meant (e.g., satire, sarcasm, irony, or understatement).
