COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Ninth grade English provides strategies for writing instruction as well as an appreciation and understanding of literary and informational texts. Students will implement these strategies through vocabulary study, expository/informative essays, persuasive/argumentative essays, narrative essays, grammar as a companion to writing, and student presentations. While short stories, poetry, and prose augment our year's study, literary works may include Fahrenheit 451, The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet, and To Kill a Mockingbird.
SUPPLIES: To be successful in this class, students need to bring these materials to class:
* A three-ring binder (1-2 inches) * Pencils & blue or black pens
* Tab dividers (at least five) * Paper (college rule)
STANDARDS: Provide clear and consistent learning goals to help prepare students for college, career, and life.

* To demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage

Homework = 10%, varies depending on unit
Formative (quizzes/classwork) = 20%, approximately 15 per quarter
Summative (tests/projects/essays) = 30%, approximately 3 per quarter
Research paper = 20%, Must be submitted to turnitin.com to receive credit - all information relating to the act of conducting research - outline, drafts, and final product
Final Exam/Milestone = 20%, one per semester
NO Extra Credit will be given
ASSIGNMENTS and MAKE-UP WORK: Please reference the student handbook for additional information.
* Assignments are due at the beginning of the period. Late work is 10% off for each day late on major
assignments. After nine days, the assignment receives a zero.
* Homework will be accepted one day late with a reduction of 50%.
* ALL late work must be given to me with the due date written along with the date submitted.
* Make-up work is only accepted with an excused absence. When you miss class, it is your
responsibility to find out what you missed before or after school and turn in the work on time—you
have five school days to submit make-up work.
HOLIDAY & STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS:
There will be no student assignments given over holidays and breaks.
PLAGIARISM, or any attempt to obtain credit for work done by another person, is unacceptable! Cheating on tests, copying work of others, copying ideas or copying word-for-word from books, magazines, encyclopedias, technology media, failing to cite proper documentation or authorship, or using someone else’s term paper. Please reference my blackboard site for a detailed explanation and consequences for plagiarism.
2nd Offense: Parent contact and/or teacher detention (20 minutes)
3rd Offense: Teacher detention (30 minutes)
4th Offense: Office referral
