Outside Reading Project

You are expected to read a novel this semester. You will complete one of the assignments listed below for a TEST grade. You MUST follow MLA guidelines for the project, and I have to approve your book by February 1st!
1. Write a short biography or autobiography of one of the characters in the novel. This must be no less than two pages. It should walk through the entire story/life of your character. Remember that it must be written using correct grammar and punctuation.
2. Write a different ending for the novel. Must be two typed pages, and all rules for grammar and punctuation must be followed. Begin with a brief synopsis of the novel - one half page minimum - Total of 2 ½ pages.
3. Using words and pictures cut out of old magazines and newspapers, as well as paint, markers, colored pencils, etc..., create a collage illustrating the plot, theme, characters, and setting of your book. You may want to include phrases or sentences copied from the book. Include a written explanation of the significance of the images you choose. Include a 1 - 2 page synopsis of the novel.
4. Create a storyboard of the novel. Include detailed information and sketches that reflect the major plot line of the novel. Tell the story! Include a 1- 2 page synopsis of the novel.
5. Write a pamphlet or handbook for people traveling to the place and time of your book. Introduce the culture and describe any differences in lifestyles and beliefs that travelers from your place and time should know about. What do the people there eat? What kinds of jobs are available? What behaviors are considered polite or rude? What do the people think is most important in life?
6. Agent’s evaluation -- Imagine that you are an agent whose job is to read already published books and evaluate them for republication in translation. Write a report in which you summarize the book and explain why you believe it would appeal to a foreign audience, either general or specific. For example, if you’re writing about The Joy Luck Club, you might support an argument that the book is suitable for distribution anywhere because its themes are universal, or you might explain why it would be of particular interest to readers in China. This must be a minimum of 2 pages typed, double spaced, and TNR 12 font.
